Birmingham: Sanket Sargar lifts Silver for India. Proud moment for India as it gets its first medal at CWG. Sanket Sargar performed brilliantly for India in the Commonwealth Games 2022 and won a silver medal in weightlifting. Sanket achieved this feat in 55 kg weightlifting XI. Sanket lifted a weight of 113 kg in the snatch. While lifting the weight of 135 kg in clean and jerk. Bin Kasdan Mohamed of Malaysia finished first in this event. He lifted up to 142 kg in clean and jerk.
Sanket missed out on winning the gold medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He suffered a minor injury in his third attempt at clean and jerk. That’s why he missed out on the gold. Sanket lifted 113 kg in snatch. While lifting 135 kg in the first attempt of clean and jerk. Whereas in the second and third attempt he could not succeed.

Sangli, a resident of Maharashtra, broke the national record in the Commonwealth Championship in December 2021. He has been the champion of Khelo India Youth Games 2020 and Khelo India University Games 2022.

Sanket was one of the favourites to finish on the podium after he had claimed gold in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent Uzbekistan in December last year. The 21-year-old had lifted 113kg to create a new national record in the snatch category and win gold.
India won the 126th medal in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games
India has been the best performer in weightlifting at the 1990, 2002 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. India is the second most successful country in the history of Commonwealth Games with 126 medals in weightlifting. Only Australia (159) has won more medals than that in the weightlifting event of these Games. India’s weightlifters dominated the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning nine medals including 5 gold.
