Pune Roads Witness 312 Fatalities in 11 Months During Late Night Hours: Survey

A recent survey by Pune traffic police has revealed a concerning trend of maximum fatalities occurring on city roads between 11 pm and 1 am. The ‘Road Crash Data’ survey documented 293 accidents leading to 312 deaths from January 1 to November 24 this year. Factors such as road reconstruction, resurfacing, and widening, non-functional traffic signals at night, and reduced traffic volume were identified as contributors to high-speed driving and fatal accidents.

The Pune police commissionerate reported a total of 1,090 accidents during the specified period. Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr emphasized the multiplying speed on city roads in recent years as a significant cause of fatal accidents, leading to emotional trauma for victims’ families and financial losses. The commissioner outlined ongoing efforts, including technological and human interventions, to enhance road safety.

Vijay Kumar Magar, DCP (Traffic), highlighted the launch of a road safety awareness campaign, aiming to educate the public on traffic rules and safety. He noted that empty roads during the night witnessed an increase in rash and negligent driving, prompting the traffic police to adapt responses and implement awareness programs.

Activist Prashant Inamdar stressed the importance of enforcement and public compliance with traffic rules to prevent nighttime accidents. While acknowledging the efforts of the traffic police, he emphasized the crucial role of citizen cooperation in reducing accidents.

According to the annual Maharashtra Road Crash Report, Pune city reported 871 accidents in 2022, resulting in 325 deaths, with vulnerable road users contributing to nearly 95% of total fatalities
