Bengaluru: Top brass of the Congress party, including former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, gave a warm welcome to Rahul Gandhi on his arrival to Karnataka on Friday, September 30, as the Bharat Jodo Yatra approached the state border. It is the first BJP-ruled state in which Rahul’s caravan has been entered on its 23rd day.

Several posters of Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders were torn around the state before the yatra’s arrival. More than 40 welcoming posters for the yatra were pulled down.

The yatra is crucial for Karnataka’s Congress, whose members have been working tirelessly for days to welcome Rahul Gandhi and the yatra. According to political analyst Sandeep Shastri, the Congress is reasserting its presence both nationally and in Karnataka through the yatra.

The yatra can play a vital role in helping the grand old party somehow regain its old reputation in Karnataka. The Congress party may be a formidable opposition in the state. The yatra has provided an opportunity to two senior leaders, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, to prove their determination to Rahul Gandhi. If the Congress wins the Karnataka Assembly elections next year, these two leaders will be key figures for the chief minister candidate.

The state Congress constituted 18 committees to manage the yatra. Congress state president DK Shivakumar also asked all party MLAs to mobilise 5,000 people from each constituency for the yatra.
