Rajasthan BJP president Satish Poonia believes retirement age in politics should not exceed 70 years

Jaisalmer: Politicians never retire in India; it is a lifelong job. This theory is not followed all over the world. In the USA, a man can’t be president of the nation for more than two terms. In India, there is no such limitation.

It is a common belief that veteran politicians deliver better in crunch time than budding ones. Rajasthan BJP chief Satish Poonia has revealed a new debate regarding the retirement age of politicians. He believes it should be 70 years. He further said that it was his personal view. If the party thinks along these lines, then what’s wrong with it?

It is important to allow a new generation to get involved in politics. One thing is clear: the thinking of the new generation is novel in comparison to the elderly. Trials have been taking place in many states, which has proved successful, “he said. Poonia added that in the past, the average age limit of block and district presidents was 60 plus years, which has now been reduced to 35–40 years.

When questions were asked, if such a decision is applied, many senior and noted politicians, including former chief minister Vasundhara Raje, Arjun Meghwal, and so on, will be debarred from the tickets in next year’s assembly polls in the state. He said each leader and worker has their own importance. Currently, only discussion is in progress on this issue, and the ball is now in the court of the party regarding the matter. Poonia was in Jaisalmer on a two-day visit on Tuesday.

Poonia further added that the BJP’s thinking is to unseat the Congress from power. The saffron party has several capable leaders and the party has to take the decision on when and which person has to be honoured. The country is lucky because PM Modi is leading the nation.
