Mumbai: One of the most talented actors in Bollywood, Randeep Hooda is coming up with yet another exciting role. After playing 19th century painter Raja Ravi Varma in Rang Rasiya (2014) and an innocent Indian farmer hanged for allegedly spying in Pakistan in Sarbjit (2016), Randeep Hooda is ready for his third biopic. The actor will bring alive the story of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in his next, Swatantra Veer Savarkar.
Randeep Hooda steps into Veer Savarkar’s shoes for biopic that traces his role in India’s freedom; director Manjrekar to take film on floors in June.
Sharing the news on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday, Randeep wrote, “Kuch kahaniyaan batayi jaati hai aur kuch jee jaati hain! (Some stories are told and some are lived). Grateful, excited and honoured to be part of #SwatantraVeerSavarkar’s biopic.”

The film announcement has been made on Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyrs’ Day. The day honours the valour of all the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country. On this day, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged to death by the British rulers of India in 1931.
Randeep will be essaying the role of controversial freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The film is expected to go on floors from June 2022 and will be shot across various locations in London, Maharashtra and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
After the great success and critical acclaim of ‘Sarabjit’, producer Sandeep Singh reunites with internationally acclaimed Indian actor Randeep Hooda on his ambitious motion picture ‘Swatantra Veer Savarkar’.
Who was Vinayak Damodar Savarkar?
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the revolutionary and Hindutva ideologue, has been the subject of several controversies. He was a liberation fighter, politician, lawyer, writer, and social reformer born on May 28, 1883.
Talking about bringing Veer Savarkar’s story to the screen, Randeep said, “There are many heroes that have played their part in getting us our independence. However, not everyone has got their due. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is the most misunderstood, debated and influential of these unsung heroes and his story must be told. I am delighted to collaborate with Sandeep after Sarabjit, for Swatantra Veer Savarkar. It will be yet another challenging role to portray.”
Veer Savarkar was a politician, activist and writer and one of the foremost pioneers of the Hindu nationalist political ideology. He developed the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva while imprisoned at Ratnagiri in 1922. He was also arrested in connection with Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination but later acquitted as there was no evidence found against him.
Randeep was last seen in last year’s Salman Khan-starrer Radhe, where he had a supporting role. Before this, he was seen in the Chris Hemsworth-starrer Hollywood action film Extraction. This year, he will be seen in the lead role opposite Ileana D’Cruz in the comedy Unfair & Lovely.
