Ranil Wickremesinghe elected as new President of Sri Lanka, won the election by securing 134 votes

Sri Lanka: On Wednesday, Ranil Wickremesinghe has been elected as the Crisis-hit new President. He has won the presidential election. Ranil Nedullas defeated Alhapperuma and Anura Kumara Disanayake. Ranil got 134 votes. His rival Dullas Alhapperuma got only 82 votes. After the appointment, Sri Lanka’s newly President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the country is in a very difficult situation, we have big challenges before us.

The voting for the presidential election took place in Colombo. Apart from acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Dullas Alhapparuma and Anura Kumara Disanayake were in the fray for the presidential election. Interim President Ranil Wickremesinghe casts his vote.Many MPs have already cast their votes. Security was tightened for voting.

This is for the first time in 44 years that Sri Lanka’s Parliament will directly elect a president. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s term will end in November 2024. On Wednesday, In the crucial election, 223 lawmakers voted while two MPs abstained. Four votes were rejected while 219 were declared valid.

Significantly, 73-year-old Gotabaya Rajapaksa had fled from Sri Lanka to the Maldives while being the President. From Maldives he moved to Singapore with his wife. Gotabaya resigned from the presidency as soon as he arrived in Singapore.The situation in Colombo worsened after Gotabaya left the country. People took to the streets and started protesting. The protesters also occupied the Parliament House and Rashtrapati Bhavan. During this there was also a clash between the protesters and the security forces. One protester was killed and several were injured in the clash.
