RCB gear up against PBKS in tonight’s encounter; MI knock CSK out

The Mumbai Indians eliminated the Chennai Super Kings from IPL contention. The two most successful sides in IPL history met against each other at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai yesterday. MI were knocked out of contention earlier, but CSK stepped down the field with the aim of winning and watching the results of other matches to see their qualification chance in the playoffs. But MI shattered their hopes with a fine all-around display.

Unfortunately, the CSK batters’ abysmal batting performance laid the team down. They were bundled out for 97 runs in 16 overs. MI easily crossed the victory line in the 15th over. Two teams are officially out of the tournament. The fight remains between seven franchises for the playoffs, because GT have already cemented their place in the playoffs.

RCB gear up against PBKS

The IPL convoy has to move fast from one stadium to another. Tonight’s action will take place at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings. Both teams are ranked fourth and eighth, respectively, in the points table.

The sprint for the playoffs becomes stiffer. All seven teams are hoping to reach the next stage and lift the coveted trophy. So far, the fate of the three teams has been decided. GT have officially qualified for the playoffs while MI and CSK are out of contention.

With RCB having just two games left in the league phase, a win against their next opponent—Punjabi Kings—would help them to be within touching distance of the playoffs. The morale of RCB is high and they will go into the match all out to cement their place in the next round.

The lean patch of former skipper Virat Kohli continues. Having scored 216 runs at a strike rate of 111.34, RCB had played on some underprepared wickets. That is another reason RCB’s batters were not up to the mark in IPL 2022. The lower order of RCB is formidable and has done reasonably well.

The bowling unit of Bangalore has not disappointed. Hazlewood has been smart and picked up 13 wickets. He has been using his line and length judiciously.

Spinner Wanindu Hasaranga continues to trouble opponents with his lethal googly and is the second highest wicket-taker this season, scalping 16 wickets.

The Punjab Kings need to win their remaining matches to think about moving to the playoff stage. The team has won 5 out of 6 matches. PBKS are lacking consistency in this season’s IPL. The form of Mayank Aggarwal is an issue for the team.

In head-to-head contests, PBKS are ahead, having won 16 matches, while RCB have emerged victorious on 13 occasions. The record of PBKS is fabulous from 2020 onwards, having won four out of five contests.

Both the sides are gearing up for tonight’s encounter. There is no margin of error. Players need to be careful and be ready to put in every ounce of their energy if they want to see their team in the playoffs. One mistake could be enough to see the exit door.

It is needless to add that the match is expected to go to the wire. Both franchises won’t leave any stone unturned. The crowd will get a chance to watch some quality cricket from both sides tonight.
