Guwahati: The Kamakhya temple in Assam’s Guwahati was back in the news after 50 MLAs of the rebel faction of the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde visited the Shakti Peethas on Wednesday, June 29. They prayed for the citizens of Maharashtra and Assam and sought the Mother Goddess’ blessings.
The MLAs walked along a path cordoned off for the public due to tight security and continued heavy rain that is responsible for the deadly floods in Assam. It’s not just these MLAs who sought Maa Kamakhya’s blessing before the Maharashtra Assembly floor test on Thursday evening.
Prominent personalities regularly visit this temple. After the Assam assembly results, Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited the temple before taking oath as the Chief Minister of Assam. PM Narendra Modi also visited the Kamakhya temple in Assam.

Bollywood celebrities and politicians also visit the temple on a regular basis to get blessings. Last year, actor Sara Ali Khan visited the temple. In 2020, Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan, Thanglen Soubam, Nikita Jaisinghani, Zena Kotwal, Amol More, and Madhuri Dixit pay a visit to the temple. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the temple as well.
The temple is located on the Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati, some 600 feet above the plains. One of India’s four Adi Shakti Peethas and one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas.
The Goddess of desire is revered as Maa Kamakhya, a manifestation of Goddess Parvati, also known as Kameswari. Of the 51 Shakti Peethas on earth, the Maa Kamakhya Devalaya is regarded as the holiest and oldest. It serves as the focal point of the popular Tantrik worship of Shaktism in India.
