Dehradun: Registration for Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been suspended till May 8 in view of the possibility of inclement weather in Kedarghati. In fact, the weather is likely to remain bad in Kedarghati for the next 3 to 4 days. Due to which Uttarakhand government has taken this decision. The doors of Kedarnath Dham were opened on April 25 and till May 4, 1.23 lakh devotees have visited Kedarnath Dham.
Due to heavy snowfall and rain, not only the Kedarnath Yatra was postponed on Wednesday but the devotees coming towards the Dham were stopped at various stops including Rishikesh, Srinagar, Fata, Gaurikund. However, with some improvement in the weather on Thursday, the Kedarnath Yatra was resumed. Taking a lesson from the 2013 disaster, the Uttarakhand government is being extremely cautious about the Chardham, especially the Kedarnath Yatra amid the ongoing adverse weather conditions in the high Garhwal Himalayan region.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police Ashok Kumar said that the decision was taken to stop the Yatra due to bad weather. So that the passengers could be saved from any possible unpleasant situation. He said that all preparations were in place to deal with any possible calamity, though no major damage occurred in Kedarnath which was constantly feared.
On Wednesday, a large part of the Kuber Glacier broke off and fell on the footpath in the Kedarnath Valley. The entire road was covered with snow. Apart from this, four porters of Nepali origin who were coming from Lincholi to Kedarnath were also stuck in the snow due to the break of the glacier, who were rescued safely by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team who reached the spot under extreme conditions.
