After the result of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the BJP said that the Mayor’s post was an “open post” and unveiled Gupta’s name on the last day. The mayoral elections are set to take place on January 6.

Who is Rekha Gupta?

Rekha Gupta is the Delhi BJP’s general secretary and the national vice president of the BJP Mahila Morcha. She has previously served as the Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Gupta graduated from Daulat Ram College, Delhi, and served as the president and general secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union in the 1996–97 sessions. Apart from that, Gupta took part in a number of notable events organised by the Delhi BJP organisation.

Kamal Bagri, a councillor from Ram Nagar ward, has been named as the party’s candidate for Deputy Mayor.

As per provisions, the MCD needs to elect five mayors for five-year terms, beginning with a woman.

Delhi had one mayor for the entire city until 2012, when the MCD was trifurcated into the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation. The unification took place early this year. So, Delhi will have one mayor for the whole city after a decade.
