Rescued Workers in Good Health, Could Return Home Soon: AIIMS Director

The 41 workers who were rescued from a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand are currently undergoing health checkups at AIIMS, Rishikesh, and there are indications that they may be discharged today. According to the hospital, the workers’ vitals are normal, and they have undergone initial investigations.

AIIMS Director, Professor Meenu Singh, stated, “They are quite normal, I won’t even call them patients. They are feeling quite normal, behaving very normally. Their blood pressure, vitals, oxygenation – everything is normal.” Preliminary investigations have been conducted to assess electrolytes and other blood parameters, with further examinations, including ECG, planned to ensure comprehensive health evaluations.

“These are very basic investigations that we have conducted. We will also perform a basic psychological assessment to monitor any potential long-term effects of the incident,” added Ms. Singh. She emphasized that the workers are not unwell, and a decision on their discharge is expected to be made today.

The 41 workers were successfully rescued from the collapsed tunnel after nearly 17 days of extensive operations involving various Central and state government agencies, national and disaster relief forces, the Indian Army, and the police. Tunnel expert Arold Dix played a crucial role in advising the government and agencies during the rescue, emphasizing the importance of a cautious approach in drilling escape holes and assessing the impact on the fragile mountainside.
