New Delhi: People in many constituencies don’t cast their vote in favour of any candidate, so they press the Nota (None of the above) button. Since 2018, Nota has received nearly 1.3 crore votes in assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

In the last Lok Sabha polls held in 2019, people cast 65.2 lakh (1.06%) votes in the kitty of Nota. The maximum Nota vote was dropped (51,660) in the Gopalganj (SC) constituency of Biha and the lowest in Lakshadweep (100).

The report reveals “red-alert constituencies,” meaning three or more candidates with criminal backgrounds and cases against them. In 2018 alone, 26.8 lakh Nota votes were cast in red-alert constituencies.

Nota came into force in India via a Supreme Court judgement in 2013. The highest court urged the Election Commission to install a Nota button in EVMs so that voters could cast their votes for Nota and show their anguish against all candidates. This way, they maintain their secrecy as well.

For the first time, the Nota button was implemented in the state assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh in 2013. In India, in the last five years, 64.5 lakh voters have pressed the button of Nota in assembly polls.

In the 2019 assembly polls in Maharashtra, Nota got the highest number of votes (7.42 lakh) and it secured the least votes (2,917) in the Mizoram polls of 2018. Meanwhile, in the Chhattisgarh assembly polls in 2018 (1.98%) votes went into the kitty of Nota and the least number of votes Nota secured (0.46%) in the Delhi assembly polls in 2020.

As per the rules, if Nota gets more votes than all the contesting candidates, then the winner’s name will not be declared and fresh elections need to be held.
