Intelligence agencies have brought to light the possibility of protests during the Independence Day celebrations at the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi. Specifically, Kuki and Meitei groups have been highlighted as potential sources of protest, with a warning that these gatherings could include the display of flags, placards, and vocal slogans by certain anti-government elements. The significance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address and the hoisting of the Indian Tricolour during the event has also been underscored.
The potential threats were addressed in a recent meeting convened by intelligence agencies in the New Delhi district. The meeting aimed to share the latest threat assessments and security preparations for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. Participants included the Special Protection Group (SPG), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the Delhi Police, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Importantly, the meeting highlighted the proximity of this year’s Independence Day celebrations to the G20 Summit scheduled for September in Delhi. It was emphasized that any untoward incident during the Independence Day festivities could cast a negative shadow on India’s image and readiness to host the high-profile, multinational summit.
The intelligence agencies also pointed to a historical trend of various groups using protests as a means to draw attention to their causes before or during significant events. In this context, issues such as the Manipur situation, farmers’ demands, the Uniform Civil Code, and labor/service-related concerns were cited as pertinent security considerations for this year’s Independence Day event.
To counter these potential threats, Delhi Police and other security agencies have been advised to proactively gather accurate and advance information about planned protests or demonstrations. Close coordination with police departments from neighboring states has been encouraged to monitor the movement of potential protesters towards Delhi.
Furthermore, the intelligence agencies have emphasized the growing role of social media in radicalization and mobilization, as well as its use for issuing threats against dignitaries and offering rewards for such actions.
Additional concerns were raised about a Pakistan-based operative linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba, who reportedly directed associates to conduct reconnaissance on specific locations in Delhi, including the headquarters of the National Investigation Agency and the Delhi Police.
A senior police officer assured that comprehensive arrangements have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents during the Independence Day celebrations.
