Baghdad: On Thursday, there were reports of a rocket attack close to the Iraqi Parliament in Baghdad.
As per the Iraqi military, the strongly protected Green Zone in Baghdad and its surroundings were bombed by at least nine Katyusha rockets, injuring locals and security personnel. The Iraqi military has not revealed the exact details of the number of people injured in the attack.
Several government buildings and foreign missions are located in the Green Zone
The rocket attack took place right at a time when the Iraqi Parliament’s session was about to begin to elect a new president. The attacks seemed to be an effort to sabotage the scheduled session.
The Parliament building has experienced a similar kind of attack earlier as well. Miscreants targeted the building when lawmakers prepared to attend a session.
The Green Zone received three rocket attacks last month as well. This happened when the session was assembled, restoring confidence in the Parliament Speaker.
According to Reuters, at least eight Katyusha rockets were fired at the Khor Mor gas field in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region on Wednesday, but there is no report of casualties or effects on operations.
