Roger Federer to share his upcoming retirement in presence of wife and parents

New Delhi: Throughout his glittering career, tennis legend Roger Federer has avoided controversy. His parents and wife played a key role in his successful career. The time has come for the 20-time Grand Slam singles champion to hang up his racquet and call it a day, as he announced his retirement in front of his wife Mirka and parents, Robert and Lynette.

Federer has already made it clear that next week’s Laver Cup in London will be his last ATP tournament. After revealing his retirement, the Swiss legend said: “It was beautiful to release the news surrounded by my mum, dad, and Mirka. 

The Swiss great remained the world’s number one tennis player for a record 237 consecutive weeks from February 2, 2004 until August 18, 2008. He once had a record number of Grand Slam titles; when he clinched his 15th major title, he broke Pete Sampras’ record.

Currently, the Swiss star’s cabinet is replete with 6 Australian Open titles, 1 French Open trophy, 8 Wimbledon trophies, and 5 consecutive US Open titles.

On the ATP tour, Federer earned 1251 wins, which is the second-most after Jimmy Connors (1274) during his career. Federer has bagged 103 tour-level trophies; only Connors (109) is ahead of him.

As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. Federer said in his retirement post.

“I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever had in over 24 years. I must recognise when it’s time to end my competitive career.
