New Delhi: The entire episode came to light when a customer travelling from Chandigarh to Shahjahanpur was asked to pay Rs 20 for a bottle of water. After being overcharged, the passenger posted a video on Twitter narrating the entire episode.
The railways became aware of the situation and opened an investigation. Chandramauli Mishra, a contractor was given a show-cause notice by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on December 15.
Mandeep Singh, the Divisional Railway Manager for Ambala, reported that the contractor had been fined Rs. 1 lakh.
The Indian Railways has fixed a list price for all vendors and contractors who are associated with it. No one has the right to charge more than the mentioned price. If anyone does this, then action will be taken, either by cancelling the contract or imposing a fine. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
