Ahmedabad: Rajendra Solanki, the Aam Aadmi Party’s probable candidate for Gujarat’s Bardoli Assembly seat, came under the scrutiny of police and Income Tax Department sleuths after Rs 20 lakh in cash was discovered on him. The I-T department has been probing the matter since the AAP candidate acknowledged that he received Rs 20 lakh cash through Angadia or hawala.

A man named Aadil Memon reported a theft of Rs 20 lakh in cash from Rajendra Solanki’s vehicle. On Wednesday night, two identified people with covered faces broke the window of Solanki’s car and stole the bag carrying Rs 20 lakh in cash.

At the same moment, Aadil Memon noticed the loot and chased the culprits like a Bollywood hero on his motorcycle for several kilometers. The thieves dropped the bag on the road and fled out of fear of being apprehended. Later, Memin brought the cash to the police station and handed it over to the officers.

Solanki was unable to provide sufficient replies when asked about the money; therefore, the police decided to enlist I-T officials to reach the bottom of the case. The cash is associated with a poll candidate, and the police have alerted government agencies like the Income Tax Department and others.

Police officials have also said this is not the first time that Solanki has received cash. Earlier, too, he received Rs 25 lakh in cash through Angadia. Officials are now trying to understand how huge a cash flow was received by the AAP candidate just before the election.
