Rupee hits all-time low of 82.33 for the first time against US dollar in early trade

Heavy dollar demand from oil importers and rising fears of a hike in interest rates also weighed on the local currency.

New Delhi: Indian Rupee has reached a new abyss. The Indian rupee has fallen to 82.33 against the dollar. The rupee on Thursday fell 55 paise to an all-time low of 82.17 per dollar on firming crude oil prices and dollar index. The Indian currency had closed below the psychological level of 82 per dollar for the first time against the dollar. Heavy dollar demand from oil importers and rising fears of a hike in interest rates also weighed on the local currency.

On Thursday, the rupee opened with strength at the level of 81.52 in the interbank foreign exchange market, but the dollar saw strong pressure on the rupee. During trading, the rupee also saw a high of 81.51 and a low of 82.17. In the end, the rupee closed at 82.17 per dollar, down 55 paise against the previous trading session.

On Tuesday, the rupee had closed at 81.62 per dollar, while on Wednesday the market was closed on the occasion of Dussehra.
