Sahara Group founder & eminent businessman Subrata Roy, 75, dies of prolonged illness in Mumbai

On Wednesday, November 14, veteran businessman Subrata Roy, the founder of Sahara India Pariwar, dies after he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes in Mumbai .

Mumbai: In a sudden turn of events, veteran businessman Subrata Roy, the founder of Sahara India Pariwar, dies after he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest following a prolonged illness in Mumbai on Wednesday, November 14. He breathed his last at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at around 10:30 pm, a statement issued by the Sahara Group said. Roy is survived by his wife, son and brother. He was 75. According to reports, Subrata Roy’s mortal remains will be brought to Sahara city in Lucknow today (November 15) where his last rites will be performed.

Sahara India Group mourns Roy’s demise
In a statement released by the Sahara India Group, it said, “It is with great sadness that Sahara India Parivar announces the demise of our honorable ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara, Managing Worker and Chairman, Sahara India Parivar. Saharasri ji an inspirational leader and visionary, passed away on 14th November 2023 at 10.30 pm due to cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on 12th November, 2023 following a decline in health.”

“His loss will be deeply felt by the entire Sahara India Pariwar. Saharasri ji was a guiding force, a mentor, and a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege to work alongside him. Details regarding last rites will be communicated in due course. Sahara India Pariwar is committed to upholding Saharasri’s legacy and will continue to honor his vision in driving our organization,” the statemen reads.

About Subrata Roy
From Araria, Bihar, he born on June 10, 1948, Roy was a eminent figure in the Indian business landscape, having established a vast empire that spanned various sectors including finance, real estate, media, and hospitality.

75-year-old Roy’s journey started with his education in mechanical engineering from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur. He ventured into business in Gorakhpur before acquiring struggling chit fund company Sahara Finance in 1976. By 1978, he had transformed it into Sahara India Pariwar, which would grow to become one of India’s largest conglomerates.

Samajwadi Party condoles Subrata Roy’s demise
Samajwadi Party (SP) took to X, formerly Twitter, to share its condolences on the death of businessman Subrata Roy. It wrote, “Death of Saharashri Subrata Roy ji, very sad. May his soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family members get the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Heartfelt tribute!”

The demise of Subrata Roy is an emotional loss for Uttar Pradesh and the country because along with being a very successful businessman, he was also a very sensitive person with a big heart who helped and supported countless people. Heartfelt tribute, said Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav.
