Mumbai: Saira Banu, the late wife of matinee idol Dilip Kumar and a prominent actress of her time, has been requesting that her late husband be honoured with the country’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. She went on to say that the cinema legend is known as the country’s “kohinoor.”
Saira Banu, who rarely makes a public appearance after the death of her husband, was present at an event on Tuesday. She was conferred with the Bharat Ratna Dr Ambedkar Award on behalf of her iconic husband, Dilip Kumar. She turned emotional while accepting the award, remembered Dilip Saab and said as if he is ‘still here’.
As a loving wife, Saira Banu dubbed him “Kohinoor”. She feels that Dilip ji deserves to be awarded the Bharat Ratna for his impeccable service in the Hindi film industry.
Union Minister Ramdas Athawale handed the honour to Dilip Kumar posthumously. Dilip Kumar passed away last year, aged 98. The minister assured that he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to think about giving the Bharat Ratna to Dilip Kumar, the legend of Hindi cinema.
Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar tied the knot in 1966. The couple were childless. Both acted together in numerous hit films, such as “Sagina” and “Gopi”.
Saira Banu broke down several times while receiving the honour. She said, “I feel terrible at any function, so I avoid it.” She said while wiping her tears.”
She feels that Dilip ji is still with her and watching everything.
