Scammer posing as friend defrauds 52-year-old of Rs 18 lakh in Nagpur

A 52-year-old man from Nagpur, Maharashtra, was allegedly cheated out of Rs 18.5 lakh by a scammer who posed as the victim's close friend, according to police.

Nagpur: A 52-year-old man from Nagpur, Maharashtra, was allegedly cheated out of Rs 18.5 lakh by a scammer who posed as the victim’s close friend, according to police. Earlier this month, the victim received a call on his phone from Canada, and the caller pretended to be one of his friends.

He informed the victim that his mother was hospitalised in Nagpur in a critical condition. The victim was also informed by the suspect that he would deposit 18.5 lakh rupees into his account to cover the victim’s mother’s medical costs, according to a police official from Yashodhara Nagar police station. Later, another caller posing as a bank official called the victim and told him that the process of transferring Rs 18.5 lakh to his account was held up due to a technical issue.

Later, the person who had posed to be the victim’s friend called him once more and requested to send Rs 3 lakh into the bank account number that he had provided in order to pay for the treatment of his mother. The victim allegedly transferred a total of Rs 18.5 lakh into the account numbers provided by the accused, according to the official.

Later, the victim realised something was wrong and went to the cyber police to file a report, according to the official. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against an unidentified accused under the provisions of the Information Technology Act and sections for cheating of the Indian Penal Code.
