Scotland: 2 Indian students found dead after tragic waterfall accident

Scotland: According to reports, two Indian students of the University of Dundee in Scotland, who had gone on a hiking trip, were found dead after a tragic accident at the Linn of Tummel waterfall tourist spot on Wednesday.

The two were identified as Jeetendranath ‘Jeethu’ Karuturi, 26, and Chanakya Bolisetty, 22, who were swept away by the waterfall. According to the information, both students were studying for a master’s degree in data science and engineering, and were taking a picture of themselves when they fell into the water.

They were hiking with two other friends when the incident happened. After receiving information, the fire service sent two boat rescue units to the scenic location and two bodies were recovered. Other media reports indicate that both the students are from Andhra Pradesh.

Karuthuri and Bolisetty began their course at the University of Dundee in January 2023 and were due to finish in May. Karuturi had a previous degree from the University of Hartford, Connecticut and was working at Taza Indian Buffet restaurant in Dundee.

Waseem Saleem, who manages the City Quay restaurant, said, “Everyone is devastated. Jeetu was really popular with everyone. He was very polite and gentle – you won’t get any drama from him.” Additionally, Bolisetty graduated from JNTUH College of Engineering in Hyderabad in 2022 and was a student ambassador at Dundee since August last year.

A University spokesperson said, “This is a tragic accident that has shocked us all, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of the students. We are providing support to those families and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

About this incident, a Police Scotland spokesperson said, “Around 7pm on Wednesday, we were called to reports of two men aged 22 and 26 in the water at the Linn of Tummel waterfall near Blair Atholl. Emergency services arrived and following a search of the area, the bodies of the two men were recovered from the water.

He added,”Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, however, there appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding these deaths. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal (public prosecutor).” According to media reports, the Indian High Commission in London has said that the families of the two students have been contacted by the Indian Consulate General, and a consulate representative has met with one of the students who lives in the UK.
