SDM Delhi Cantonment along with Bachpan Bachao Andolan rescue 14 child labours in Delhi’s Naraina industrial area

New Delhi: In a joint operation led by the SDM Delhi Cantt along with Bachpan Bachao Andolan – founded by Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi and law enforcement agencies including Delhi Police, Labour Department, and ChildLine have rescued 14 child labours from 5 business establishments including from electronic assembly units and printing press in Naraina Industrial area in Delhi. Bachpan Bachao Andolan’s partner organization Bal Vikas Dhara (BVD) was also part of the joint operation.

Among the 14 children rescued in the operation 6 are girls and the rest are all boys aged between 13 to 17 years. All the children are from Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. These innocent children were forced to work as child labours and were made to work for long hours of upto 12 hours a day at very paltry wages of Rs.100 per day. Many of the children were working since 6 months in the establishments.

Expressing his anguish on the employment of minors as child labour in commercial establishments, Manish Sharma, director of Bachpan Bachao Andolan said, “Despite having stringent laws to protect children from all kinds of exploitation and child labour, people continue to engage minor children in commercial activities and exploit them. Many corrupt people are also trafficking young children and forcing them into child labour. These are serious crime and the government should make the child protection and law enforcement agencies proactive at all levels to curb rising crimes against children. The Union government must enact the anti-trafficking bill at the earliest to curb the problem”.

Following the orders of SDM Cantt, Delhi police have sealed the 5 establishments and FIR have been registered against the owners under Sections 3 and 14 of Child Labour Act, 75 and 79 of Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act. All the rescued children have been produced before the CWC after undergoing medical tests and are now sheltered at Child Care Institution (CCI).
