Second Gold in Weightlifting: India Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins Gold in Men’s 67kg final

New Delhi: The country has got its fifth medal at the Commonwealth Games today. Jeremy Lalrinnunga creates history by winning the weightlifting gold medal. He is the first male athlete from India to win a gold medal in Birmingham. So far, India has got five medals and all the medals have come in weightlifting.

Indian weightlifter Lalrinnunga Jeremy won the gold medal by lifting a record weight in the men’s 67kg category on the second day of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. In snatch, Jeremy lifted 140kg, setting a new Commonwealth Games record, while in clean and jerk, he lifted a total of 300kg with 160kg to set a new Commonwealth Games record in his category. Before Lalrinnunga Jeremy, Sanket Sargar (Silver), Gururaj Pujari (Bronze), Mirabai Chanu (Gold) and Bindyarani Devi (Silver) had won medals for India.

Talking about Jeremy, he lifted 136kg in his first attempt in the snatch, while in the second attempt he lifted 140kg and set a new record in the 67kg category at the Commonwealth Games. In the third attempt, he tried to lift 143kg but he was unsuccessful. In the snatch, he was 10kg ahead of the second-ranked Nigerian.

Despite the injury, Jeremy tried to lift 165kg in the third attempt, taking a risk, but he failed in it. He had suffered a leg injury earlier, but after the third attempt, his left hand also suffered a blow.
