Security Lapse During PM’s Visit: Punjab Suspends Bathinda SP Gurbinder Singh for Dereliction

The Punjab government has taken action against Bathinda Superintendent of Police (SP) Gurbinder Singh, suspending him for dereliction of duty related to a security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state on January 5, 2022. The suspension comes nearly two years after the incident, where Modi’s visit to Hussainiwala in Ferozepur was called off due to a security lapse.

Gurbinder Singh, who was posted as SP, operations, in Ferozepur at the time, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect, according to an order issued by the state home department on November 21. The decision follows a report submitted by the Director General of Punjab Police on October 18, 2023, highlighting Gurbinder Singh’s alleged failure to perform his duties properly during Modi’s visit.

The order issued by Home Secretary Gurkirat Kirpal states that the suspension is a result of the director general’s remarks in the report, and it has been implemented after consideration by the competent authority.

During Modi’s visit, his convoy was stranded on a flyover due to a blockade by protesters in Ferozepur, leading to his return from Punjab without attending any scheduled events, including a rally. A Supreme Court-appointed committee previously investigated the security breach and indicted several state officers for lapses. The suspension of SP Gurbinder Singh marks the first action against a police officer for the identified lapses in security during the incident.
