New Delhi: The Additional Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, Radha Rauri, has made a remark against the Uttar Pradesh Police that they arrest innocent people on a regular basis. The guilty should be punished rather than the blameless. This led to a verbal spat between the police of the two states on Monday.
The Uttar Pradesh Police criticised the additional chief secretary for her “irresponsible” remarks.
After an unsuccessful UP Police raid in Uttrakhand to apprehend an alleged sand mining mafia, Radha Raturi made the statement. The wife of a local BJP politician died as a result of the raid.
She claimed that the Uttar Pradesh police had arrested innocent people and then blamed them for their crimes. It shouldn’t be this way; one innocent person could result in the emergence of 99 more criminals.
The Uttar Pradesh Police, after going through the statement of the additional chief secretary, home, Uttarakhand, the UP police remarked that it is an irresponsible statement by the ACS without knowing the facts. “Any civil servant should avoid such statements, especially when they are related to the matter of the country’s biggest and most sensitive state,” Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar was quoted as saying.
Raturi later clarified that she meant to say that one should first investigate the crime and identify the guilty parties, and then punish them while sparing the innocent. The police of both states, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, often collaborate to deter crime. As reported, the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand police had an argument over an unsuccessful raid a few days ago.
