Ahmedabad: American phobia has not been eradicated from the minds of a large number of people in India. Therefore, some people take the risk of entering the US illegally for a better life. Likewise, seven Gujarati youths were caught by US immigration officers in July while they were attempting to reach New York unlawfully, according to Gujarat police officers.
The guilty parties were aged 20 and 25; they reached Canada in the second week of July in the hope of landing in the US.
They were arrested while entering New York via Quebec, Canada by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The youths face charges under the Alien Act and are under detention in Albany, “said a source.
The state police ran from pillar to post to gather details of the seven youths who were aspiring to reach the USA. The police quizzed their families, but no positive response was received. The family members repeatedly said that they didn’t have any idea about their journey to the US.
The police claimed that the seven youths obtained fake IELTS certificates to travel to Canada on a student visa, and from there they were aiming to cross the border and reach the US, but were caught by the US agency. They received the forged ELTS certificates with the help of a local agent from Mehsana and its counterpart in Delhi.
