Chennai: Tamil Nadu Police detained All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader Edappadi Palaniswami, along with his supporters, for holding a hunger strike in Chennai’s Valluvar Kottam on Wednesday.
They were on a hunger strike over being expelled from the Tamil Nadu assembly on Tuesday.
Officials said that the police detailed the leaders because they had not got permission to stage the protest.
One of the detained AIADMK leaders, Gokula Indra, said, “This is nothing more than the murder of a democracy. We were staging a peaceful protest. We wanted to go on a hunger strike but failed to get permission.
AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said, “We are being taken to Rajaratnam stadium. The government is getting into totally unlawful activity. “
On Tuesday, EPS and several members of his party were removed from the state assembly regarding the disturbance issue inside the house. The speaker, Appavu, alleged that EPS was creating a ruckus so that he and his cadres would not be present when the resolution against Hindi came up.
EPS, while talking to the media, said that the AIADMK had sent a letter to the speaker stating that OPS had been dismissed as the deputy opposition leader and that RB Udayakumar had replaced him.
EPS also claimed that the speaker had not complied with the majority AIADMK’s order and alleged that he was acting based on the suggestions of the ruling DMK.
