Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Dwarka and Sharda Peeth, passed away on Sunday. They were 99 years old. He breathed the last in Narsinghpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Formatanand Saraswati was considered to be the biggest religious leader of Hindus. A few days ago, Swaroopanand Saraswati celebrated his 99th birthday, in which many big leaders including MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan met him.
The Ganga Ashram of Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati is in Jhoteshwar of Narsinghpur district. He breathed his last here on Sunday at 3.30 pm. Swaroopanand Saraswati was born on 2 September 1924 in Seoni, MP. In 1982, he became the Shankaracharya of the Dwarka Sharda Peeth in Gujarat and the Jyotir Math in Badrinath.
PM Modi expressed grief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply saddened by the demise of Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. “My condolences to his followers in this time of grief. Om Shanti!” he wrote.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath expressed grief
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said the seer’s passing away is an irreparable loss to the community of religious leaders.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed grief
Priyanka Gandhi remembered Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. She said- Swamiji dedicated his entire life for religion, spirituality and charity. After getting his blessings after bathing in the Ganges in Prayagraj in the year 2021, I got a chance to discuss with him on the country, religion and generosity, goodwill. Swamiji had done our Griha Pravesh Puja in 1990 during my father’s stay. This is an irreparable loss to the entire society. Praying to God to give courage to the followers of Swamiji to bear the hardships in this difficult time.
She wrote – The whole society is mourning on the death of Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati ji. He made a huge contribution in the spiritual progress of the country. Humble tribute and salute to Shankaracharya ji.

Shankaracharya Saraswati’s parents named him Pothiram Upadhyay in his childhood. He left home at the age of 9 and turned to religion. He took education of Veda-Vedang and Shastras in Kashi (UP). Swami Swarupanand Saraswati also took part in the freedom struggle. He served 15 months in jail. Saraswati had spent 9 months in jail in Varanasi in UP and 6 months in Madhya Pradesh.
