New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor visited party president Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath Road residence on Monday. The meeting took place ahead of the Congress presidential election on October 17.
Shashi Tharoor, along with fellow party leaders Deepender Hooda, Jai Prakash Agarwal, and Vijendra Singh, arrived at 10 Janpath Road to meet Sonia Gandhi.
Shashi Tharoor recently generated excitement when he suggested he was considering running for the Congress presidential post.
He has advocated for party reforms despite not being a member of the Group of 23 Congress leaders. He met with G-23 leaders in March of this year.
The post of Congress president has been vacant since the resignation of Rahul Gandhi in 2019. The Congress presidential election is to be held on October 17.
A petition by some young Congress workers, urging the incoming party leader to fully implement the Udaipur Declaration so that the party can function smoothly, was supported by Shashi Tharoor earlier in the day.
“I welcome this petition that is being circulated by a group of young @INCIndia members, seeking constructive reforms in the party. It has gathered over 650 signatures so far. I am happy to endorse it and to go beyond it, “Shashi Tharoor said in a tweet.
The petition demands adherence to Gandhian philosophy and organisational reforms, including the requirement of 50 per cent of the leaders to be under 50 to occupy the party posts.
