India's G20 sherpa, Amitabh Kant, has revealed that the New Delhi Declaration, which addressed the G20 leaders' divided stance on Russia's actions in Ukraine, was the result of extensive negotiations, spanning almost 200 hours of continuous discussions. Shashi Tharoor praises India’s G20 sherpa for successful negotiations after claiming “200 hours of continuous talks”

India employed a series of robust negotiation strategies, engaging with key players like China, Russia, and Western nations, and received strong support from Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia in their efforts to reach a consensus. Reports suggest that India presented the final draft to G20 members on Friday night, making it clear that if they did not agree, there would be no declaration.

Confirming this significant achievement, Kant emphasized that the New Delhi Declaration was the product of numerous rounds of discussions and that consensus was only reached late on Friday night.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor commended Kant’s negotiation skills, saying, “Well done ⁦@amitabhk87! Looks like the IFS lost an ace diplomat when you opted for the IAS! ‘Negotiated with Russia, China, only last night got final draft,’ says India’s G20 Sherpa on ‘Delhi Declaration’ consensus.” Tharoor also described this as a “proud moment for India at G20.”

Sources have confirmed that India successfully persuaded China to agree to the text related to the Ukraine conflict after the European Union had concurred with the text.

On the first day of the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised everyone by announcing that the G20 leaders’ declaration had been adopted with consensus, despite the initial reluctance of both the Russia-China alliance and Western nations to alter their positions on the Ukraine crisis.

The declaration was adopted after India introduced a new text related to the Ukraine crisis, breaking the impasse. Initially, the draft left the section on the “geopolitical situation” or the Ukraine crisis empty.

Negotiators from G20 states managed to reach an agreement on 75 other paragraphs in the draft, covering topics such as financing for climate transition, reform of multilateral development banks, and cryptocurrency regulation.

French diplomatic sources commended India’s ability to bring countries together and find compromise solutions on the Ukraine conflict. They noted that not many countries possess the negotiating power demonstrated by New Delhi.

European sources also praised India’s tough negotiations, considering the consensus on the declaration a significant achievement. Regarding the absence of the term “Russian aggression” in the declaration, which was present in the Bali G20 declaration, sources explained that Western nations were content with the overall outcomes.
