Shraddha murder case: Accused Aftab withdraws his bail application, lawyer says miscommunication

Aftab Amin Poonawala, accused in the Shraddha Walkar murder case, while appearing in a Delhi court through video conference, said on December 17 that he did not know that a bail application had been filed on his behalf.

New Delhi: Aftab Poonawala, accused in the Shraddha Walkar murder case, has withdrawn his bail application filed in a Delhi court. Due to misunderstanding between Aftab and his lawyer, the bail application was withdrawn.

Aftab’s lawyer MS Khan told the court that after a 50-minute long discussion with Aftab on Monday, the accused has decided to withdraw the bail plea. The lawyer clearly told the court that the petition was filed due to wrong information. The Delhi Police, while filing a reply in the Saket court, had said that Aftab Poonawala should not be granted bail, as his crime had deeply affected the society.

Aftab’s lawyer had sought time to talk to his client during the last hearing held on 17 December. Aftab Amin Poonawala, while appearing in the Delhi court through video conference, said on December 17 that he did not know that a bail application had been filed on his behalf.

Poonawala told the court that he had signed the ‘vakalatnama’ but was not aware that a bail application would be filed on his behalf. Additional Sessions Judge Vrinda Kumari said that the bail plea will remain pending and when the accused meets the lawyer, then only it will be decided whether the bail plea will be presented or not.

On the other hand, Shraddha’s father Vikas Walkar told the media that Aftab had brutally murdered his daughter. Aftab should be punished severely and the role of his family members should also be investigated. He should also be punished as he did to my daughter. I want him to be hanged. What happened to my daughter should not happen to anyone.

Accused Aaftab allegedly chopped Shraddha Walkar’s body into 35 pieces and kept those in a 300-litre refrigerator for almost three weeks at his residence in south Delhi’s Mehrauli, before dumping those across the city over several days.

Police last week found some key physical evidence in the murder case, with a DNA test confirming that the bones that alleged killer Aftab Poonawalla led police to a forest in Delhi’s Mehrauli area and Gurugram were indeed his. . Traces of blood found in his flat have also been mentioned in the test report done on the basis of his father’s DNA sample.

This crucial evidence came over a month after her boyfriend Aaftab Poonawala was arrested for having killer her in May.
