Shubman Gill scripts history, becomes fifth Indian to score a double century in ODIs

India's young opener Shubman Gill created history by scoring a double century in ODIs against New Zealand in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad: Indian cricket team’s young opener Shubman Gill created history while batting against New Zealand in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Gill completed his first double century in 145 balls by hitting three consecutive sixes off Lockie Ferguson in the 49th over of the innings. Gill was dismissed after scoring 208 runs in 149 balls. Gill is the fifth Indian to score a double century in ODI cricket. Before him, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma (three), Virender Sehwag and Ishaan Kishan have done this feat.

Gill’s double century is the tenth double century in ODI history. Sachin Tendulkar became the first player to score a double century in ODI history in 2010 at Gwalior. After that, the dominance of Indian players has been seen among the players who scored double centuries. Rohit Sharma is the only player to score three double centuries in ODIs.

Youngest player to score a double century in ODIs
23-year-old Shubman Gill has become the youngest batsman to score a double century in ODI cricket history. He hit 19 fours and 9 sky-high sixes during his innings of 208 runs in 149 balls. During this innings, Shubman became the first player to score the biggest innings and double century in ODI cricket against New Zealand. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar had the record of playing the biggest innings in ODI cricket against New Zealand. He played an inning of 186 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad itself.

Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar
Shubman Gill has overtaken Sachin Tendulkar to become the fifth joint-highest innings score for India in ODIs. Shubman Gill is in fifth place after Rohit Sharma(264), Virender Sehwag(219), Ishan Kishan(210), Rohit Sharma(209), Rohit Sharma(208), Shubman Gill(208). Sachin Tendulkar has dropped out of the top 5 with an unbeaten 200*.
