Sidhi (MP): The driver of horrific Sidhi district bus accident in which at least 50 people died of drowning in the canal was nabbed by the Satna police on Wednesday. The driver had took an alternative route along Bansagar canal to escape.
The driver, identified as Balendra Vishwakarma, is a resident of Hardua village under Semaria police station of the district.
Satna SP Dharmveer Singh said, “The accused was arrested late in the night from Basti area of Satna district and was handed over to the Sidhi police.”
Meanwhile, Sidhi SP Pankaj Kumawat told reporters, “The accused driver has been arrested and he has been booked under 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) is being increased. He is being interrogated further.”
As per news, with 60 passengers on board the private bus (MP19P 1882) – going from Sidhi to Satna – fell into the Sharda canal, which is about 560 km from state capital Bhopal, after the driver lost control of the vehicle at around 7:30 am on Tuesday.
In this horrific accident most of the victims were found dead in their seats. Twenty of those killed are women, most of them were going to attend an ANM (auxiliary-nurse-midwife) exam in Satna town, about 140km away. The other half of the victims were their guardians, mostly brothers and fathers. Two children are among the dead.
Meanwhile, a few are still reported missing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former CM Kamal Nath have expressed grief at the tragedy.
Furthermore, state CM announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of each of the dead. While, Rs 2 lakh were also announced to be given from PM Relief Fund.
