Sikkim election results: Opposition wiped out in Sikkim, know about Prem Singh Tamang who outweighed everyone

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Bharatiya Janata Party has tried hard to capture the third power in the country by giving the slogan ‘This time we cross 400’, but the Modi wave has failed in the ongoing vote counting trends of Sikkim Assembly elections on Sunday. Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), led by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, is leading on 31 out of 32 assembly seats. Whereas the majority figure in Sikkim Assembly is 17 seats.

In the vote counting trends, once again Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) seems to be returning to power in Sikkim. According to the trends, the party seems to be gaining a huge majority. SKM is leading at 31. While SDF is ahead on one seat. Whereas BJP and Congress also failed to open their accounts. If these trends translate into results, then this victory for SKM would mean that Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang is set for his second consecutive term.

Let us tell you that the party was formed in 2013. Prem Singh Tamang, a founding member of the Chamling-led SDF, had formed the Sikkim Revolutionary Front in 2013 by rebelling against the former Chief Minister. He accused the SDF of corruption and bad governance. SKM had won 10 seats in the 2014 assembly elections, the very next year of its formation. After this, in 2019, it won 17 seats and ousted the Pawan Kumar Chamling government from power after being in power in the state for more than 24 years.

Who is Prem Singh Tamang?

Let us tell you that the full name of the President of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is PS Gole alias Prem Singh Tamang. Prem Singh Tamang was born on 5 February 1968, the son of Nepali-speaking parents Kalu Singh Tamang and Dhan Maya Tamang. He did his BA from a college in Darjeeling and started working as a teacher in a government school.

Tamang left his government job after three years of service for social service and then joined the SDF. His political journey of three decades has been full of ups and downs. He was elected to the Sikkim Legislative Assembly for five consecutive terms since 1994. He served as a minister in the SDF government until 2009.

Chamling refused to give him a ministerial berth during the fourth term of the SDF government (2009–14). After this Tamang left the party and formed his own party. He resigned from all SDF posts and assumed responsibility as SKM chief.

Went to jail in 2016

In 2016, Tamang was convicted of embezzling government funds between 1994 and 1999. Later his membership in the Assembly was terminated. Prem Singh Tamang was the first politician in the state to be suspended from the assembly after being convicted. He challenged the decision in the Sikkim High Court which upheld the decision leading to Golay’s surrender. When Tamang came out of jail in 2018, thousands of his supporters welcomed him and took out a procession in solidarity with their leader.
