Kolkata: A group of nine smugglers attacked soldiers of the Border Security Force on the India-Bangladesh border on Wednesday with sharp weapons and sticks at around 10:30 pm, officials said today.
The troops of the Matiyari border out post were engaged in a mission to apprehend smugglers when they were attacked. A jawan opened fire with a non-lethal weapon, causing the attackers to flee.In spite of being severely injured, the soldiers managed to bring back one of the gang members
Jahangir Alam Mondal was injured in a scuffle and was detained with 504 bottles of the prescription medication Phensedyl.
First aid was provided to the injured jawans and the arrested smuggler before they were admitted to the government hospital in Bengal’s Krishnaganj.
The confiscated Phensedyl is estimated to be worth Rs 1,03,476.
During interrogation, Jahangir Alam Mondal confessed that he and his other accomplices were going to smuggle Phensedyl when they were stopped by the BSF. His aides attacked the BSF jawans so that they could be freed, Mondal added.
An FIR was eventually filed against Mondal and his associates. Mondal was later handed over to the local police along with the confiscated Phensedyl.
