Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Monday, ‘Goa Police has investigated this murder case in the right direction, but there is a constant demand that the case should be handed over to the CBI. Sonali Phogat’s daughter has also made the same demand. So today we will handover this case to CBI. I myself will write a letter to the Home Minister today, recommending the investigation of this case to the CBI.’

Significantly, 42-year-old Sonali Phogat died on 23 August last. He was brought dead at a private hospital in Anjuna after he was allegedly given drugs at the Curlies restaurant in North Goa.

It was initially told that Sonali died of a heart attack, but the postmortem confirmed multiple internal injuries in her body and drugs in her blood. The doctors who conducted the post-mortem also considered a drug overdose as a possible cause of his death. Goa Police in their initial investigation found a CCTV footage of Curlies restaurant, in which Sonali was seen being forced to drink something by two of her associates.

In another CCTV footage, Sonali Phogat was seen in an unconscious condition, she was unable to walk and two men were seen carrying her into the room supporting her on their shoulders. When the police investigated further, it was found that both the men seen in the CCTV footage were known to Sonali.

Phogat and his associates had a party on the intervening night of August 22 and 23 at the Curlies restaurant in Goa. Phogat, who rose to fame from Tiktok, was brought dead at a hospital in North Goa district on August 23, a day after reaching Goa. The Goa Police has so far arrested accused Sudhir Sangwan, another associate Sukhwinder Singh and three others in connection with the murder. On the other hand, the demolition work of some parts of Curlies restaurant at Anjuna Beach in Goa, linked to Phogat’s death, was resumed on Friday afternoon. Earlier the demolition process was stopped midway after the order of the Supreme Court.
