Sibal quits Congress

Veteran Congress leader and former union minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said he has resigned from the Congress party and filed a nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections in the presence of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and party MP Ram Gopal Yadav. He said he quit the party on May 16.

“I had tendered my resignation from the Congress party on May 16th,” Sibal said after filing a nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections with the support of SP.

The surprise package is a former union minister and a well-known face of Congress, Kapil Sibal. His name is in the air and the SP may field him as its Rajaya Sabha poll candidate.

Discussion is taking place on the name of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief, Jayant Chaudhary. If he goes to Rajaya Sabha, then he will reach parliament after a gap of eight years. He represented the Mathura Lok Sabha seat from 2009–2014.

Some party leaders have taken the name of Dimple Yadav, former Kannauj MP and wife of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Several Muslim leaders in SP are pressing that the party should go with a Muslim candidate for a Rajya Sabha seat to restore Muslims’ faith in the party. SP is busy finalising its candidates for the Upper House.

Sibal has been able to win the heart of SP ever since he took up Azam Khan’s case in the Supreme Court and finally freed him from jail last week.

“If he (Sibal) managed to pursue Azam Khan’s bail successfully and got the party veteran out of jail, the party should send him to the Upper House,” said a senior party leader.

Khan has already come out in support of SP, and understandably so. “I will be the happiest person if SP is thinking of fielding him (Sibal) as a party candidate for Rajya Sabha.” He is competent and deserves it,” Khan said on Tuesday.
