Statue of Unity Breaks Visitor Records in Its Fifth Year, Celebrating Tourism Triumph

Situated on the picturesque banks of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Kevadia, Gujarat, the Statue of Unity, a towering tribute to India’s Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has witnessed a remarkable surge in its annual footfall. In less than five years since its grand inauguration, this colossal monument has welcomed nearly 160 million visitors.

The statistics reveal that the footfall at the Statue of Unity has exhibited consistent growth over the years, with the exception of 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted travel across the globe.

During the initial two months following the monument’s inauguration, which took place on October 31, 2018, on Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary, the world’s tallest statue witnessed an astounding 453,020 visitors. This was followed by over 27 million visitors in 2019. Even in 2020, a year in which the tourism sector faced unprecedented challenges due to a once-in-a-century pandemic and related movement restrictions, nearly 13 million tourists flocked to the Statue of Unity. While the country was still grappling with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Statue of Unity experienced a footfall of over 34 million visitors in 2021.

Last year saw a record-high footfall of 43 million visitors, and 2023 has already recorded 36 million visitors with more than two months remaining.

One key highlight that has further solidified its status as a prominent tourist attraction is the annual visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31 to pay homage to Sardar Patel. The Prime Minister’s visit not only underscores the significance of the statue but also highlights Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s invaluable contribution to the nation.

Beyond being a tourist destination, the Statue of Unity also serves as a venue for significant national and international events. Various conferences, including the Directors General of Police (DGs) conference, ambassador’s conference, and heads of mission meetings, have been held at this iconic location.

In December 2018, the three-day All India Conference of Director Generals/Inspector Generals of Police took place in Kevadia and was addressed by Prime Minister Modi. The Ministry of External Affairs organized a three-day Heads of Missions Conference in Kevadia last year from October 20 to 22, which brought together 118 heads of Indian missions (ambassadors and high commissioners) from around the world. Prime Minister Modi also participated in the conference, making it a significant diplomatic endeavor.

These events provided a unique backdrop for meaningful discussions and diplomatic endeavors, keeping a constant spotlight on the emerging tourist hub.

The Statue of Unity stands as a testimony to the unity and diversity of India, and it is likely to continue attracting tourists from across the globe. Its remarkable success not only pays tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel but also cements its position as a symbol of national pride and a vibrant hub for cultural and diplomatic exchanges. It is a testament to India’s rich heritage and a beacon for the future of Indian tourism.
