New Delhi: Chief Justice of Supreme Court N. V. Ramana is retiring at the end of this month. In such a situation, on Thursday, he announced the name of his successor. Justice Ramana told Supreme Court Justice U.U. Lalit’s name has been recommended for the next ‘Chief Justice’. Also, the recommendation letter was handed over to the Minister of Law and Justice. If this recommendation is accepted, Justice Lalit will take over as the 49th Chief Justice.

Chief Justice NV Raman became the 48th Chief Justice of the country on 24 April 2021. He had replaced Justice SA Bobde. On Wednesday, the Secretariat of the Chief Justice of India was approached by the Ministry of Law and Justice. It requested that he suggest the name of his successor.

As per the rule, one month before retirement, the incumbent Chief Justice recommends the name of his successor. He sends the name of the new CJI to the President in a sealed cover. In this, the name of the second senior-most judge after the current Chief Justice remains. After the recommendation is approved, President Murmu will administer the oath to the new justice. Although there is no time limit for the tenure of the CJI, there is a provision for the judge to retire at the age of 65.

Justice Lalit will be the second CJI in the country, who came from the Bar Council to become a judge and then got a chance to become the Chief Justice. Earlier this happened in March 1964, then Justice SM Sikri got a chance to become a judge from the Bar Council and then he also became the CJI. Justice S.M. Sikri became the Chief Justice of the country in January 1971.

Meanwhile, after decades in the Supreme Court, such an opportunity is going to come, when the country will see three Chief Justices in four months. Apart from CJI NV Ramana, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud will also become the Chief Justice during the coming November from July this year. Five years after this interesting coincidence, in 2027, the country will witness a similar coincidence. In the year 2027, between September and October, three Chief Justices will come and go in two months.

Justice UU Lalit’s full name is Uday Umesh Lalit. He was born on 9 November 1957 in Maharashtra. Initially he practiced in the Bombay High Court, but in 1985 he moved to Delhi. After this, he worked as an advocate in the Supreme Court for a long time. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on 13 August 2014. He will retire from his post on 8 November 2022.
