Supreme Court will get two new judges, President approves; CJI will administer oath today

Two new judges of the Supreme Court will take oath this morning. Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate KV Vishwanathan will take oath as judges of the Supreme Court. After the recommendation of the collegium, the central government has approved the appointment of both the judges.

President Draupadi Murmu appointed Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra as a judge of the Supreme Court. Along with this, senior advocate K.K. Venkataraman Vishwanathan has also been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10.30 am today. Live streaming of this ceremony will also be done.

Vishwanathan can become CJI in 2030

KV Vishwanathan will become the Chief Justice of the country in August 2030 and will lead the Supreme Court for more than nine months i.e. till May 24, 2031. He will be the fourth judge to become the CJI directly from the Bar Association.

Four judges will retire next month

Two judges of the Supreme Court, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice MR Shah, have retired in the last two days. Justice KM Joseph is due to retire on June 16, 2023, Justice Ajay Rastogi on June 17, Justice V. Ramasubramaniam on June 29 and Justice Krishna Murari on July 8.

Viswanathan completed a five-year integrated law degree from Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University and enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1988. After practicing before the Supreme Court for over two decades, he was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2009. Vishwanathan, a former Additional Solicitor General, has appeared in a wide range of cases on diverse subjects including constitutional law, criminal law, commercial law, insolvency law and arbitration. His stature as an eminent member of the Bar has been recognized by the Supreme Court in several cases where he was appointed to assist the court as an amicus curiae.

Justice Mishra was appointed as a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court on 10 December 2009. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on October 13, 2021. The Collegium, in its resolution, stated that the Chhattisgarh High Court has no representation in the present composition of the Supreme Court of India. The motion states that Justice Mishra has served as a High Court judge for more than thirteen years
