Suriname honors President Draupadi Murmu with highest civilian award, signs three MoUs

India and Suriname on Monday signed three major MoUs in the field of capacity building including health and agriculture. He said that there is a need for cooperation to increase bilateral trade between the two countries.

Suriname: Indian President Draupadi Murmu, who reached Suriname, was honored with the highest honor ‘Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star’ by President Chandrika Prasad Santokhi. After receiving the award, Murmu said that this honor holds significance for people across India. The President said that “I also dedicate this honor to the coming generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a significant role in enriching the relations between our two countries.” It is of utmost importance that I represent.

Along with this, India and Suriname on Monday signed three major Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of health, agriculture and capacity building. The agreement was signed after delegation-level talks between President Murmu and his Suriname counterpart Chandrikaprasad Santokhi.

150th anniversary of arrival of Indians

President Murmu led delegation-level talks between the two sides. President Murmu is happy to be in Suriname on his first state visit, said a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in Suriname is being celebrated. The President remarked that Suriname, like India, is a diverse nation inhabited by people of many races, languages and religions. According to him, the diverse and contemporary friendship between India and Suriname is built on strong historical and cultural ties.

President Murmu handed over medicines from India to his Suriname counterpart Chandrika Prasad Santokhi. According to information received from media reports, the last presidential visit from India to Suriname took place in 2018.
