Suspected militants ambush the advance security convoy of Manipur Chief Minister, one injured

N Biren Singh Convoy Attacked: Militants ambushed the security convoy of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in Kangpokpi district on Monday (June 10, 2024). News agency PTI quoted the police as saying that one soldier has been injured.

Police said that the security convoy of CM N Biren Singh was going to violence-hit Jiribam district of Manipur, but during this suddenly several rounds were fired. In view of this, the security forces took immediate retaliatory action. Firing is still going on near Kotlen village.

Speaking to sources, an official said, “Chief Minister Biren Singh has not yet reached Imphal in Manipur from Delhi. He was planning to go to Jiribam to take stock of the situation in the district.” Actually, the militants had set fire to two police posts, forest department office and more than 50 houses in Jiribam.

Tension continues in Jiribam
Police said that the situation in Jiribam district of Manipur is tense, but under control. After the incident that occurred on Saturday (June 8, 2024), additional security forces have been deployed in the affected areas. A senior police officer said that more than 70 houses were set on fire in Lamtai Khunau, Dibong Khunau, Nunkhal and Begra villages.

Violence had erupted in Manipur’s Jiribam after the killing of a 59-year-old man by suspected militants. An official had told that a person named Soibam Saratkumar Singh had gone missing after going to his farm on June 6. He said that his body was later found, which had marks of wounds caused by a sharp object.

More than 200 people have died and thousands have been rendered homeless in the ongoing caste violence since May last year.
