Damascus: A bomb exploded near the Sayeda Zeinab mausoleum, a shrine of the Shia community in the southern province of Damascus, the capital of Syria. Six people were killed and 23 were injured in the bomb blast in Sayyida Zainab town. To execute this bomb blast, a car was hit by a motorcycle.
According to the information, it is a terrorist attack. The bomb was planted in the car. The blast was carried out about 600 meters (yards) from the tomb of Saeeda Zainab, the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad and daughter of Shia Islam’s founding leader Imam Ali. After the blast, the authorities have increased the security around the tomb.
It was the second attack this week at the shrine. Two people were wounded in a separate blast on Tuesday. It is high season for the shrine as Shi’ite Muslims flock there to mark the mourning period of Ashura.
Sayeda Zeinab – the granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammad – is venerated by Shi’ites and her shrine is a site of mass pilgrimage for Shi’ites from across the world. It has also been a magnet for Shi’ite militiamen in Syria.
Both Iran and the Tehran-allied Lebanese group Hezbollah have backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that erupted in 2011.
