Tamil Nadu: All govt and private schools closed in these districts due to heavy rain

Tamil Nadu: Today, All government and private schools in Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Theni, Pudhukottai, and Nilgiri districts of Tamil Nadu will remain closed due to continuous rainfall and waterlogging situations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the intense rainfall to a cyclonic circulation over interior Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the lower tropospheric levels.

Tamil Nadu: Today, All government and private schools including Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Theni and Nilgiri districts of Tamil Nadu will remain closed due to continuous rainfall and waterlogging situations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the intense rainfall to a cyclonic circulation over interior Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the lower tropospheric levels.

The decision to close all schools has been taken by District collectors of eight districts, according to the information. The Nilgiris Mountain Railway in a statement said that passengers of the cancelled train services will be given a full refund of the ticket fare.

Earlier, the IMD said that cyclonic circulation over Tamil Nadu were likely to cause moderate to medium rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in Kerala during the next five days. According to the weather forecast department, Light to moderate rainfall was reported at many places with isolated Very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Kerala and Mahe from 08.30-17.30 hrs IST on 22nd November 2023.

Earlier, Puducherry and Karaikal regions too have received incessant rain in the last 24 hours which prompted the territorial government to declare a holiday for schools in the region on Wednesday. Puducherry recorded 5 cm rainfall during the last 24 hours which concluded at 8.30 am while Karaikal experienced 9 cm rainfall.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Kerala and Tamil Nadu on November 22. The department said on microblogging site X, “Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala and Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal today, the 22nd November.”
