Tamil Nadu: Heavy rain lashes Chennai city, streets flooded, schools shut; Emergency services are on high alert

Chennai: Heavy downpour batters Chennai on Wednesday, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions at various locations. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu’s capital city and neighbouring districts until December 2. Chief Minister MK Stalin ordered ministers, lawmakers, and local representatives to extend crucial support to the affected communities. The Meteorological Department reported heavy rainfall ranging from 5 cm to 6 cm and even more in Chennai and adjacent regions.

The regional meteorological department issued an Orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 2 and 3 for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts. The delta and coastal districts are also likely to receive heavy rainfall in the upcoming days.

Anticipating heavy rainfall, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools in Chennai, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts will also remain closed. Schools and colleges in Thiruvallur district will also remain closed. This preventive action is typical in areas prone to heavy rainfalls and is designed to ensure the safety of the school-going population. The holiday applies to all educational institutions within the Chennai district, giving families the chance to plan and take necessary safety measures during the rainy conditions.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) observed heavy rainfall at isolated places in Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi districts of Tamil Nadu including Puducherry and Karaikal region. The forecast predicts this for three consecutive days, starting from November 30. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has also issued a warning of more intense rainfall from December 2 to 4.

The current Northeast Monsoon is crucial for Tamil Nadu’s drinking water and irrigation needs. Adequate rainfall during this season is vital for replenishing water reservoirs and sustaining agricultural activities in the region.

The state remains on high alert as weather conditions evolve, with the government actively engaging in relief measures to support the affected population.

Many areas of Chennai are already experiencing heavy rains, resulting in waterlogging. This has caused inconvenience to the residents of Chennai. With rain predicted to intensify further, the local government has taken the precautionary step of declaring a school holiday to ensure the safety and well-being of students and families.

As Tamil Nadu braces for a wet day tomorrow, residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates, follow safety guidelines, and cooperate with local authorities to ensure the well-being of communities across the affected districts.
