Chennai: An IPS officer in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district is accused of torturing and pulling out teeth of 10 people who were allegedly arrested. Official sources said on Monday, 2020 batch Deputy Superintendent of Police Balveer Singh (39) allegedly tortured people caught in different cases recently.
The officer, a native of Rajasthan, was posted at the Ambasamudram police sub-division in Tirunelveli district. On the complaint of the victims, Tirunelveli District Magistrate KP Karthikeyan has ordered an inquiry. Following the allegation, the state police relieved the IPS officer of posting and kept him in waiting.
In the video, Chellappa told, Balveer Singh was wearing white gloves at the police station. Balveer called me inside after which other police officers held his hand and then Balveer broke his teeth with the help of Calipers. His brothers and people from other factions also met the same fate. His brother was also tortured in the same way. My brother was newly married and now he is not even able to get up from the bed because of the harassment.
Chellappa said that it has been almost ten days since the incident, but my brother is still not able to walk without any support.
Police also accused of threatening
Chellappa has accused the police of threatening him before producing him in court. He told that the police told him that we do not have to tell in the court that he was beaten up in the police station. Also, if we were asked about our injuries, we were asked to tell the court that we had fallen from a tree while plucking coconuts or had fallen from our bike.
Chellappa, his brother and others detained with him are not the only ones to level allegations against Balveer Singh. TNM also alleged that a man named Vedha Narayanan was tortured at the VK Puram police station where he had gone over a family dispute. After several allegations of custodial torture surfaced, the Tamil Nadu government removed Balveer Singh IPS from his post and put him on a waiting list.
Balveer Singh is a 2019 batch IPS officer from Haryana. The matter came to light when people talked about their experiences on videos that went viral on social media. Human rights activist Sudha Ramalingam said that this is a serious human rights violation. A police officer has to be a role model for his fellow policemen. For this, criminal prosecution should be initiated without any delay. The state government should provide necessary medical services to the victims.
