Tamil Nadu: Six men arrested for stripping, assaulting, urinating on two Dalit youths

In a shocking incident, a group of six people, Most Backward Community (MBC), were arrested for allegedly stripping, assaulting, urinating and for robbing on two Scheduled Caste youths from the Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu.

Tirunelveli: In a shocking incident, a group of six people, Most Backward Community (MBC), were arrested for allegedly stripping, assaulting, urinating and for robbing on two Scheduled Caste youths from the Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, police said on Thursday.

According to the police, the six men were identified as S Nallamuthu, R Ayiram, M Ponmani, B Ramar, M Siva and Lakshmanan, all between the age group of 21 to 25 years. Several political parties denounced the atrocities on the SC youths and called for concrete measures to prevent such crimes in the future.

According to police, the occurrence occurred on October 30 (Monday) night between 7.45 pm and 1 am on the Thamirabarani riverbed when Manoj and Mariyappan, two youths from the area went to take a bath. When they were returning home, a gang intoxicated with alcohol and marijuana ambushed the two youths and attacked them.

According to officials, the two men were thrashed when the gang found out that they were youths from the Dalit community. The two men were stripped naked and urinated on after assaulting them with weapons. The six-member gang of the region brutally assaulted them till midnight. The Dalit youths were threatened and their money and cell phones were seized, along with five thousand rupees and their ATM cards.

The two youths however absconded from the gang naked and managed to reach their home at around 1.30 am. The relatives and friends who came to know about the brutality were shocked and promptly rushed those who were seriously injured to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Based on the complaint, the Thachanallur police in the district registered a case and arrested the gang under charges of committing cruelty, assault, and injury with weapons, indulging in robbery, and the Prevention of SC/ST Atrocities Act.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu-based pro Dalit party- VCK alleged that the police was attempting to depict the incident as a simple robbery and omitted several points from the victims’ complaint in the FIR. However, Tirunelveli Police Commissioner refuted his allegations.
