New Delhi: The Union government has been focusing on electric meters in Bihar. A team from the Centre is set to land in Bihar to probe complaints made by consumers about inflated electricity bills after the installation of smart meters, stated union power minister RK Singh on Thursday.
Darbhanga Town MLA Sanjay Saraogi requested the union energy minister to do something as people have been facing the issue of excess billing and complain about irregularities in billing has now become common since the setting up of prepaid smart meters. He further added that the poor have been facing a lot of difficulty.
On the complaint of Saraogi, the minister announced that a Central team would visit Bihar to probe the matter regarding extra billing. The minister said that those who installed prepaid meters have complained of extra metre bills. Therefore, a team from Central will go to Bihar to investigate the issue.
“Each state has a separate electricity department. However, the Centre provides money for development projects. The Union government has to bear half the cost of the meter as well. “We are ready to change the meter,” the minister said, that any extra money charged to consumers will be refunded if the meter is not read correctly.
However, the minister said the installation of smart meters was a healthy step towards modernization in the power sector.
