Telangana: Hyderabad University students allege transphobia on campus, demand stronger policy

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) students’ union has decided to hold a protest on Tuesday after the clothes of two transgender students were burnt in the men’s hostel over the weekend. The student union is demanding a robust policy on the issue of transgenders to assure their safety and rights.

The incident unfolded in the intervening hours of late Saturday and early Sunday when two transgender students, Hritik and Tiku washed their clothes and hung them up to dry. The clothes were later found burnt in the men’s hostel.

Hritik, a member of Ambedkar Student Association (ASA), is also the first dalit trans woman to be elected to the student body. “The incident has left me in furious and shock. This is best described as ragging or an atrocity,” Hritik was quoted as saying by sources.

She said that she faced transphobia on campus previously as well. “In 2022-23, there were digital campaigns questioning my identity and photos, videos were spread. The university must bring in strong policy to protect our rights before the new academic year begins,” Hritik said.

UoH officials said that they would look into the matter and will take stern action against the culprit.
